EA Sports UFC 2 for PlayStation 4 is an ambitious attempt at capturing the excitement and intensity of the mixed martial arts world. With a new physics-driven hit reaction and knockout system, every KO feels more visceral and unique, adding an element of authenticity missing from previous iterations. It’s evident that the developers at EA Sports have put some thought into making the fights feel realistic and gratifying.
One aspect that stands out in EA Sports UFC 2 is the simultaneous two-fighter interaction. This brings the ground game to life with greater responsiveness and variety. Whether you’re surprising your opponent with a flying armbar from the clinch or executing a quick transition from a knee bar to a heel hook, the game succeeds in making every move feel dynamic and engaging. This attention to detail adds a layer of immersion that retro gaming enthusiasts can appreciate, reminiscent of classic games where every action had a purpose.
The addition of standing submissions and submission chaining in EA Sports UFC 2 is a welcomed touch. It adds depth to the gameplay and allows players to explore different strategies when it comes to grappling and submitting opponents. This kind of strategic thinking was often prevalent in vintage games, where players had to carefully plan their moves and anticipate their opponent’s next move. It’s a nod to the past that helps elevate the game’s nostalgic charm.
While the improved blocking and parrying system in EA Sports UFC 2 gives players new tools to fend off their opponent’s attacks, it falls short of being fully satisfying. The mechanics can feel clunky and unresponsive at times, making it difficult to execute defensive maneuvers with precision. This lack of refinement in the gameplay dampens the overall experience and detracts from the game’s potential.
The overall rating of 3.5/10 for EA Sports UFC 2 reflects the game’s mixed performance. While it excels in some areas, such as the physics-driven hit reaction and knockout system, it falls short in others, like the somewhat flawed blocking and parrying system. Retro gaming enthusiasts may find moments of enjoyment and appreciation, but ultimately, the game fails to capture the magic of classic titles in its entirety.
