X-Men: Legends for PlayStation 2 is a game that truly captures the essence of the X-Men universe. Developed by Raven Software and published by Activision, this game allows players to control multiple characters as they fight together as a team, a concept that is both engaging and refreshing. It draws inspiration from the movies and comic books, creating a fantastic new adventure that gives players the opportunity to develop their specialized powers throughout their missions.
What sets X-Men: Legends apart is its ability to assemble an ideal X-Men crew from over 15 popular characters from the last 40 years. This includes fan favorites such as Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Gambit, and Beast. Each character brings their own unique abilities and playing style to the mix, adding depth and variety to the gameplay. It’s important for players to strategize and consider the specific abilities of their chosen X-Men before embarking on missions. For example, stealth-intensive missions may require the inclusion of Wolverine and Nightcrawler to help bypass detection devices, while Cyclops and Colossus are better suited for clearing a path through hordes of enemies with their optic blasts and immense strength.
Once the action begins, players have the freedom to take control of any member of their squad, immersing themselves in the thrilling world of mutant warfare. The ability to execute multi-character combinations, such as the famous Wolverine/Colossus Fastball Special, adds an extra layer of excitement to the gameplay. It’s these little details and nods to the classic X-Men stories that truly make X-Men: Legends a nostalgic experience for fans of the franchise.
As players progress through the game, their characters will gain experience points that can be used to upgrade their abilities and learn new fighting styles. This provides a sense of progression and growth, allowing players to tailor their X-Men to their preferred play style.
While X-Men: Legends successfully captures the essence of the X-Men universe, there are some drawbacks worth noting. The graphics, while serviceable for the PlayStation 2 era, can feel a bit dated by today’s standards. Additionally, the controls can be a bit clunky at times, requiring some patience and adaptation.
