NFL Blitz 20-02 for Xbox is a nostalgia-inducing trip back to the heyday of arcade-style football games. Developed by Point of View and published by Midway, this game is a throwback to the classic Blitz series that captured the hearts of gamers in the late 90s and early 2000s. While it certainly brings back memories of its predecessors, it falls short in certain areas, earning a rating of 4 out of 10.
One standout feature of NFL Blitz 20-02 is the new Impact Player option. This allows players to have complete control over the route and assignment of their Impact player during any play in the team’s playbook. This level of customization adds a new layer of strategy to the game, allowing players to adapt and make split-second decisions that can change the course of the match.
The game also boasts over 1500 brand new animations, featuring high-flying catches, game-breaking runs, and earth-shattering tackles. Some of these animations were even motion-captured with professional stuntmen, adding a level of realism and intensity to the gameplay. These visually impressive moves create a sense of spectacle and excitement, reminding players of the over-the-top action that made the Blitz series so beloved.
In terms of gameplay mechanics, NFL Blitz 20-02 retains the tried and true point-n-pass system that fans of the series will be familiar with. However, it also introduces the option of using the icon passing system, giving players more flexibility in their passing game. This addition caters to both fans of the classic Blitz gameplay and those looking for a slight twist on the formula.
While NFL Blitz 20-02 successfully captures the spirit of its predecessors, there are areas where it falls short. Some players may find the gameplay to be repetitive and lacking depth compared to modern football games. Additionally, the graphics and overall presentation may feel dated by today’s standards. However, for those seeking a dose of nostalgia and a reminder of the retro gaming era, this game can still deliver a fun and entertaining experience.
In conclusion, NFL Blitz 20-02 for Xbox pays homage to the classic Blitz series while introducing new features and animations. With its Impact Player option, high-flying moves, and the option of both point-n-pass and icon passing systems, this game offers a nostalgic feel and reminiscent gameplay. However, it falls short in terms of depth and modern presentation. If you’re a seasoned retro gaming enthusiast looking for a trip down memory lane, NFL Blitz 20-02 may be worth a playthrough.
