WE ARE DOOMED provides a thrilling retro gaming experience for fans of the classic twin-stick shooter genre. Developed and published by Vertex Pop, this game pays homage to the golden age of gaming with its simplistic yet addictive gameplay mechanics.
At its core, WE ARE DOOMED is all about annihilating polygon adversaries using an immensely powerful laserbeam. The satisfaction of charging up the laserbeam and watching it transform into the formidable SUPERBEAM is pure nostalgia-inducing joy. With a single touch, the SUPERBEAM obliterates everything in its path, leaving behind a satisfying trail of destruction.
One of the standout aspects of this game is its unique lo-fi aesthetic. The bold shapes, glitching geometry, and neon colors transport players back to the days of arcade cabinets and pixelated graphics. It’s a visual treat that evokes a sense of nostalgia while still managing to feel fresh and contemporary.
However, despite these notable strengths, WE ARE DOOMED falls short in certain areas. The overall gameplay experience can feel repetitive and lacks the depth and variety that many retro enthusiasts crave. The lack of diverse enemy types and level design variety may leave some players longing for a more engaging and captivating experience.
Additionally, the game’s longevity is a point of concern. Its limited content may leave players yearning for more, especially considering its relatively steep price point. While the initial enjoyment and excitement are present, it fizzles out all too quickly, leaving players craving something more substantial to sink their teeth into.
In conclusion, WE ARE DOOMED captures the essence of retro gaming with its unique aesthetic and satisfying gameplay mechanics. It undoubtedly appeals to fans of the twin-stick shooter genre and delivers a dose of nostalgic bliss. However, its lack of depth, limited content, and potential for repetitive gameplay prevent it from reaching the heights of the classic games it seeks to emulate. Despite its flaws, WE ARE DOOMED offers a brief but enjoyable trip down memory lane for retro gaming enthusiasts.
