Three Fourths Home: Extended Edition for Xbox One is a unique and thought-provoking visual short story that takes players on a nostalgic journey back to the days of retro gaming. Set in the heartland of Nebraska, this game expertly blends elements of classic games with a modern storytelling approach, creating an experience that is both familiar and refreshing.
From the moment you start playing, Three Fourths Home immediately immerses you in its atmospheric world. The intense thunderstorm raging outside sets the stage for a compelling storyline that unfolds through an extended exchange between Kelly and her family during a drive home. The constant sound of raindrops and distant thunder, combined with the nostalgic pixelated graphics, create a captivating atmosphere that perfectly captures the essence of retro gaming.
The dialogue-driven gameplay is where Three Fourths Home truly shines. As you navigate the treacherous roads, you engage in conversations with your family through a series of dialogue choices. These choices not only shape the narrative but also provide insightful glimpses into the characters’ lives and relationships. It’s a reminder of the power that simple text-based games can have in telling deeply personal and emotionally charged stories.
However, despite its evocative atmosphere and engaging dialogue, Three Fourths Home falls short in a few areas. While the pixelated graphics and limited color palette are intentional nods to retro gaming, they may not appeal to players who prefer more visually striking games. Additionally, the gameplay itself can feel monotonous at times, as the majority of the experience involves driving and engaging in conversations with limited interaction.
Though Three Fourths Home: Extended Edition is not without its flaws, it remains a worthwhile experience for those seeking a unique and introspective gaming journey. Its ability to transport players back to the era of retro gaming is commendable, and the storytelling prowess shines through the minimalist visuals. Ultimately, Three Fourths Home is a testament to the fact that even in a world of flashy graphics and complex gameplay mechanics, there is still room for simpler, narrative-driven experiences that leave a lasting impact.
