Super Mutant Alien Assault for Xbox One is a rapid and brutal arcade platformer that takes gamers on a nostalgic journey through 12 intense and rapid-fire single-screen levels. Developed by Cybernate and published by Surprise Attack, this game is clearly inspired by the retro classics that defined the golden era of gaming.
With its random combination of platform layouts, objectives, vending machines, and enemies, Super Mutant Alien Assault captures the essence of the early arcade titles that demanded lightning-fast reflexes and precise movements. The unpredictable nature of each level keeps players on their toes, never knowing what obstacles or foes await them around the corner.
While the game does succeed in delivering an experience reminiscent of classic arcade games, it unfortunately falls short in a few key areas. The graphics, although intentionally retro, lack the polish and finesse found in the golden age classics. The pixelated visuals and simplistic animations may not appeal to modern gamers accustomed to the visual prowess of contemporary titles.
In terms of gameplay, Super Mutant Alien Assault offers a challenging and adrenaline-pumping experience. The tight controls and fast-paced action make for an engaging and immersive adventure. However, the difficulty curve can be frustratingly steep at times, testing the patience of even the most seasoned retro gaming enthusiasts.
Despite its shortcomings, the game does offer a multiplayer mode, allowing players to team up with friends and tackle the alien onslaught together. This cooperative feature adds an extra layer of enjoyment to an already captivating gameplay experience.
Overall, Super Mutant Alien Assault succeeds in delivering an authentic retro gaming experience, transporting players back to a time when arcade cabinets ruled the gaming landscape. While it may not be able to match the aesthetic or technical prowess of its predecessors, it nonetheless offers a challenging and adrenaline-fueled adventure that will surely satisfy fans of the genre. With its nostalgic feel and intense gameplay, Super Mutant Alien Assault is a worthy addition to any retro gaming enthusiast’s library.
