El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron, developed and published by Ignition Entertainment for the Xbox 360, attempts to immerse players in a captivating narrative inspired by the apocryphal ‘Book of Enoch.’ Spearheaded by the likes of Sawaki Takeyasu (known for his work on Devil May Cry) and Masato Kimura (of Okami and Viewtiful Joe fame), the game’s pedigree certainly holds promise for retro gaming enthusiasts seeking a fresh experience.
Players assume the role of Enoch, tasked with honing his combat prowess and mastering an array of celestial weaponry under the guidance of watchful Archangels. The Old Testament’s esoteric lore is woven into the game’s storyline, promising a unique and thought-provoking adventure for those drawn to deep narrative experiences.
Visually, El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron showcases an art style that evokes nostalgia for classic games. The vibrant and stylized graphics stand out, transporting players to ethereal realms filled with awe-inspiring landscapes and imaginative character designs. It is clear that the development team has dedicated tremendous effort to create a visually striking experience reminiscent of beloved retro titles.
However, it is in the gameplay department where El Shaddai falters. Combat mechanics, while initially enjoyable, lack depth and nuance, leading to repetitive and predictable encounters. The absence of memorable boss battles dampens the overall excitement and fails to capitalize on the potential showcased in other aspects of the game.
Moreover, the pacing suffers from occasional lulls, hindering the player’s engagement with the storyline. While the narrative itself holds promise, it fails to consistently captivate and may leave some players longing for more substantial character development and plot twists.
Despite these shortcomings, El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron should be commended for its artistic vision and ambitious storytelling. The game exudes a distinct charm that will resonate with retro gaming enthusiasts, whispering of the classics that inspired it. The dedication to delivering a visually stunning experience, combined with a unique approach to narrative, demonstrates the creative prowess of the development team.
In conclusion, El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron earns a rating of 4/10. While its artistic merits and allusions to classic games provide a nostalgic appeal, the gameplay falls short of delivering a truly satisfying experience. Retro gaming enthusiasts may find moments of delight, but those seeking a well-rounded adventure may find themselves longing for more substance. Regardless, El Shaddai stands as a testament to the team’s creativity and ambition, even if it ultimately misses the mark.
