Actual Sunlight for PlayStation VITA is a unique and introspective experience that delves into the complexities of love, depression, and the relentless grip of the corporate world. Developed by Will O’Neill and WZO Games, this short interactive story immerses players in the life of Evan Winter, a young professional battling the demons within himself, set against the backdrop of bustling Toronto.
The narrative of Actual Sunlight is linear, guiding players through three distinct phases of Evan’s life. It is an unavoidable journey that seeks to provoke deep reflection and introspection. As players inhabit Evan’s perspective, they witness the consequences of his decisions and encounter the individuals who failed to bring about any meaningful change in his life.
One of the most striking aspects of Actual Sunlight is its unflinching portrayal of depression. The game pulls no punches in showcasing the harsh realities and emotions that engulf Evan’s existence. The raw and honest portrayal of this mental health struggle allows players to gain a profound understanding of the challenges faced by those living with depression.
Visually, Actual Sunlight adopts a minimalist approach, reminiscent of classic retro games. The simplicity of the graphics adds to the overall atmosphere, drawing players into Evan’s bleak world. Through its pixelated art style, the game effectively captures the feeling of nostalgia, evoking memories of older gaming eras while tackling contemporary themes.
While Actual Sunlight succeeds in exploring complex and important topics seldom addressed in video games, it falls short in certain areas. The gameplay mechanics are basic, consisting primarily of walking and interacting with objects in Evan’s environment. This simplicity may limit the engagement for some players seeking more interactive gameplay experiences.
Furthermore, Actual Sunlight’s brevity may leave some longing for a more extensive exploration of Evan’s story. With its short playtime, the game may not fully satisfy those seeking a more immersive and fleshed-out narrative. Additionally, the lack of meaningful choices and diverging paths may prevent some players from feeling a sense of agency within the story.
Despite these shortcomings, Actual Sunlight for PlayStation VITA is a poignant and affecting experience. Its poignant storytelling and bold exploration of themes make it a noteworthy addition to the gaming landscape. While the gameplay may be simplistic, the game’s emotional impact and thoughtfulness will resonate long after the credits roll. Fans of retro games looking for a contemplative journey into the depths of human emotions will find Actual Sunlight to be a rewarding and thought-provoking experience.
