Call of Duty: Black Ops III – Zombies Chronicles for PlayStation 4 is a mixed bag that will certainly tickle the nostalgia bone for die-hard fans of the franchise. While it delivers on the promise of remastered classic Zombies maps, it falls short in several areas, leaving a lukewarm impression overall.
First and foremost, the inclusion of eight remastered maps from Call of Duty’s past is a commendable effort from Treyarch. It’s a treat to revisit iconic locations from Call of Duty: World at War, Call of Duty: Black Ops, and Call of Duty: Black Ops II. Each map has been given a high-definition makeover, bringing a fresh coat of visual polish that enhances the experience. It’s undeniably satisfying to see these beloved locales rendered with modern graphics.
However, the gameplay mechanics of Call of Duty: Black Ops III – Zombies Chronicles leave something to be desired. While the core gameplay loop of surviving endless waves of undead enemies remains intact, it lacks the tightness and balance that made those original maps so captivating. The remastered versions feel slightly disjointed, with elements that don’t quite mesh well together. The pacing of the gameplay can be erratic, leading to frustrating moments of imbalance.
In terms of audio design, Treyarch has managed to capture the essence of the original Zombies maps. The haunting melodies and eerie sound effects create a tense atmosphere, effectively ratcheting up the suspense and adrenaline. It’s these small details that transport players back to a time when Zombies mode was a thrilling and fresh addition to the franchise. Kudos to the developers for maintaining the nostalgia-inducing audio experience.
One notable aspect that falls flat in Call of Duty: Black Ops III – Zombies Chronicles is the lack of innovation. While the remastered maps provide a trip down memory lane, it would have been exciting to see some new features or twists added to breathe new life into these classics. Without any substantial additions, it feels like a missed opportunity to revitalize these beloved maps in a meaningful way.
Overall, Call of Duty: Black Ops III – Zombies Chronicles for PlayStation 4 is a decent package that caters to avid fans of the Zombies mode. It successfully captures the nostalgic essence of the original maps through improved visuals and atmospheric audio. However, its lack of gameplay innovation and occasional imbalances prevent it from reaching its full potential. If you’re a die-hard Zombies fan with a hankering for some retro action, this collection will scratch that itch, albeit with some caveats.
