Borderlands: The Handsome Collection has arrived to whisk nostalgic gamers back to the golden era of co-op shoot ‘n’ loots. As an experienced retro gaming enthusiast, it’s thrilling to see these beloved titles reinvigorated for the PlayStation 4. However, this collection falls short of recapturing the magic of the original games, earning a middling rating of 4 out of 10.
One aspect of The Handsome Collection that harkens back to classic gaming is the addictive nature of its co-op gameplay. Just like the retro games of yore, gathering a group of friends to traverse the desolate wastelands and take down monstrous enemies is an absolute blast. The satisfying loot drops and weapon customization options add depth and replayability, evoking memories of those late-night multiplayer sessions with pals.
Visually, this collection receives a welcomed facelift for the next-gen consoles, with enhanced graphics and smoother frame rates. It’s a treat to explore the cel-shaded landscapes of Pandora and the moon of Elpis in all their high-definition glory. These upgrades lend an air of nostalgia as they breathe new life into the familiar environments, striking a balance between the old and the new.
On the downside, The Handsome Collection falls short in its execution of storytelling. While the original Borderlands games were known for their quirky and darkly humorous narratives, this collection veers into repetitive and uninspired storytelling. The script lacks the wit and charm that made the franchise stand out, leaving the player yearning for the clever writing that was a hallmark of classic retro games.
Another area that diminishes the collection’s appeal is its technical flaws. Glitches and bugs often mar the experience, breaking the immersion and reminding players that they’re not playing a finely polished gem like the games that inspired Borderlands. These technical hiccups can be frustrating, particularly when they disrupt the flow of gameplay or hinder progress.
In summary, Borderlands: The Handsome Collection offers glimpses of the glory days of retro gaming. The co-op gameplay and upgraded visuals provide moments of joy and nostalgia, yet they are overshadowed by lackluster storytelling and technical issues. While it may not live up to the lofty standards set by its predecessors, this collection still manages to capture some of the spirit that made Borderlands a beloved franchise.
