Blue Reflection, developed by Gust and published by Koei Tecmo Games, is a game that takes players on a journey through the trials and tribulations of high school life. Playing as student Hinako Shirai, who has closed herself off from the world after a tragic accident ends her ballet career, players are thrown into a heartwarming story of friendship and self-discovery.
One of the standout features of Blue Reflection is its vibrant and lively setting – Hoshinomiya Girls’ High School. As players navigate through the school, they will have the chance to interact with emotionally unbalanced characters, unraveling the mysteries of The Common – a parallel dimension filled with demonic beings. These encounters provide a unique and nostalgic feel reminiscent of classic RPGs.
Hinako, along with her new best friends, the magical Shijou twins, are bestowed with the power of Reflectors, which allows them to shape and manipulate The Common with their imagination. This gameplay mechanic adds an interesting twist to the traditional RPG formula, allowing players to engage in thrilling battles against demonic creatures and solve the problems that arise between dimensions.
Blue Reflection also introduces the ‘Free Space!’ social network, which makes staying in touch with friends a breeze. This feature not only allows for easy communication but also includes exciting mini-games both in and out of school. This aspect of the game adds a layer of lightheartedness and fun, giving players a break from the challenges they face in The Common.
Additionally, players have the freedom to make the most of their free time after classes. They can engage in after-school activities, explore The Common, or explore various locations in the town. Each action taken during this free time has a direct impact on the events that will unfold the next day, adding a sense of consequence and agency to the gameplay experience.
While Blue Reflection possesses elements that will resonate with retro gaming enthusiasts, such as its classic RPG mechanics and nostalgic themes, it falls short in certain areas. The game’s rating of 3.5/10 indicates that there are various flaws or shortcomings that prevent it from reaching its full potential. These may include issues with gameplay mechanics, storytelling, or overall execution.
Despite its shortcomings, Blue Reflection offers a heartfelt and enjoyable experience that captures the essence of classic gaming. Players who appreciate RPGs, nostalgic themes, and the power of friendship will find moments of genuine enjoyment throughout their journey at Hoshinomiya Girls’ High School.
