Beholder: Complete Edition for PlayStation 4 takes players on a journey into a grim and oppressive dystopian world, where the State wields absolute authority. In this new age, privacy is just a distant memory, and survival depends on navigating the complex web of government surveillance. As the manager of a government-run apartment building, your ultimate goal is to maintain the well-being of your residents while simultaneously carrying out the demands of your superiors, who desire complete knowledge of every aspect of the lives within your dilapidated walls.
One aspect of Beholder: Complete Edition that truly captures the essence of retro gaming is its evocative atmosphere. The oppressive ambiance, dripping with tension and despair, seamlessly transports players back to a bygone era where such emotionally charged environments were the norm. The game’s visuals, with its dark and gritty aesthetic, further enhance this nostalgic feeling and pay homage to the classic games that that have left an indelible mark on the gaming landscape.
While the concept of blending critique and appreciation may seem challenging, Beholder: Complete Edition manages to achieve this delicate balance. The game introduces players to a captivating narrative, exploring the ethical dilemmas that arise in a society ruled by an unforgiving government. The thought-provoking storyline is definitely one of the game’s highlights, evoking a sense of introspection and fostering discussions about morality and the boundaries of authority.
However, despite its intriguing premise and evocative atmosphere, Beholder: Complete Edition falls short in certain areas. The gameplay mechanics, while functional, feel uninspired and lack the depth and innovation that one might expect from a retro-inspired game. Repetitive tasks and a lack of variety make the overall experience feel monotonous and fail to fully engage players.
Furthermore, the implementation of the game’s controls on the PlayStation 4 platform leaves much to be desired. The clunky and unresponsive interface can often frustrate players, detracting from the overall enjoyment of the game. It is unfortunate that such a critical aspect of the gaming experience was not given the attention it deserved.
In conclusion, Beholder: Complete Edition for PlayStation 4 successfully captures the essence of retro gaming with its evocative atmosphere and thought-provoking narrative. While the game falls short in terms of gameplay mechanics and controls, it still manages to deliver a captivating experience that will resonate with fans of the genre. Despite its flaws, Beholder: Complete Edition stands as a testament to the nostalgic appeal of classic games while offering a unique and engaging perspective on a dystopian society ruled by an unforgiving State.
