Meridian: Squad 22 is a real gem for retro gamers looking to relive the glory days of science-fiction real-time strategy games. With its focus on base building and advanced tactics, it brings back memories of classic titles like Command & Conquer and Starcraft. The game allows for complete control over your strategic decisions, giving you the power to shape the outcome of your story.
One of the standout features of Meridian: Squad 22 is its nostalgic feel. From the moment you start playing, it’s clear that the developers at Elder Games were aiming to capture the essence of vintage strategy games. The pixel art graphics and the retro-inspired soundtrack transport you back to the heyday of the genre, instantly sparking a sense of nostalgia. It’s refreshing to see a modern game pay homage to its retro roots.
However, while Meridian: Squad 22 nails the nostalgic look and feel of vintage titles, it falls short in some key areas, which results in a slightly disappointing experience. The lackluster storyline and character development fail to engage players on a deep level, leaving them feeling detached from the game’s world. The absence of multiplayer options also limits the game’s replayability and potential for long-term enjoyment.
On the gameplay front, Meridian: Squad 22 delivers a solid experience, albeit with room for improvement. The base building mechanics are intuitive and satisfying, allowing players to construct and customize their own bases from scratch. The advanced tactics add an extra layer of depth, requiring players to think strategically and adapt to various combat situations. However, the AI can sometimes be frustratingly unpredictable, leading to frustrating moments during battles.
Despite its flaws, Meridian: Squad 22 offers a decent real-time strategy experience for those seeking a trip down memory lane. Its nostalgic visuals and gameplay mechanics successfully evoke the spirit of classic strategy games, making it a worthwhile addition to any retro gaming collection. However, players should be aware of its limitations, particularly in terms of storytelling and multiplayer options. Meridian: Squad 22 may not reach the heights of its predecessors, but it still manages to deliver an enjoyable, if somewhat flawed, retro gaming experience.
