I Am Setsuna for PC is a heartfelt tribute to the golden age of JRPGs, drawing inspiration from the likes of Chrono Trigger and other classics that defined the genre. Developed by Tokyo RPG Factory and published by Square Enix, this game aims to capture the essence of those retro gems and transport players to a world brimming with nostalgia.
Set in a beautifully crafted world, I Am Setsuna follows the story of a young heroine named Setsuna who is destined to make a profound sacrifice to protect her people. The game presents a melancholic atmosphere that permeates every aspect, from the hauntingly beautiful soundtrack to the minimalist art style reminiscent of yesteryear’s pixelated wonders.
Despite its admirable intentions, I Am Setsuna falls short in a few areas. Its combat system, while heavily influenced by the turn-based mechanics of its predecessors, lacks depth and strategic complexity. Battles become repetitive and monotonous, with a limited range of abilities and a lack of innovative gameplay mechanics to break the mold.
One of the standout features of I Am Setsuna is its music, composed by the highly acclaimed Tomoki Miyoshi. The melodies are melancholic and evocative, tugging at the heartstrings of any nostalgic gamer. It perfectly captures the emotional weight of the story, enhancing the overall experience and immersing players in its world. The soundtrack alone is worth the price of admission for those seeking a truly authentic retro feel.
The narrative of I Am Setsuna is well-crafted, evoking a strong sense of melancholy and melancholy that permeated many classic JRPGs. The characters are deeply developed, and their individual stories intertwine seamlessly with the overarching plot. Players will find themselves invested in the fates of these characters, rooting for their success and feeling the weight of their sacrifices.
Visually, I Am Setsuna showcases the charm of retro-inspired pixel art, harkening back to the days of 16-bit classics. The environments are beautifully rendered, with snow-covered landscapes and quaint villages that exude a sense of tranquility and isolation. While some may find the pixelated visuals dated, for those seeking a nostalgic trip down memory lane, it is a refreshing reminder of gaming’s humble beginnings.
In conclusion, I Am Setsuna for PC offers a mixed bag of nostalgic delights and missed opportunities. While its homage to classic JRPGs is commendable, the repetitive combat and lack of innovative gameplay mechanics dampen the overall experience. However, for fans of the genre and those seeking a genuine retro feel, I Am Setsuna captures the essence of a bygone era, with a beautifully melancholic atmosphere and a captivating narrative that will resonate long after the game is finished.
