Tricky Towers for the Nintendo Switch is a multiplayer tower building game that seeks to engage players in a frenetic race to construct the tallest and sturdiest tower. The premise may sound enticing, harkening back to classic competitive puzzle games, but unfortunately, the execution falls short of its nostalgic aspirations.
The game's visuals attempt to capture the charm of retro gaming, with its blocky art style and vibrant colors reminiscent of titles from the past. While this aesthetic may invoke a sense of nostalgia for seasoned gamers, it unfortunately does little to elevate the overall experience.
One of the most disappointing aspects of Tricky Towers is its lackluster gameplay. The controls feel clunky and imprecise, often leading to frustrating moments where your tower crumbles due to a mistimed placement. The multiplayer aspect, which should be the game's main draw, fails to deliver the excitement and intensity that it promises.
Moreover, the use of magic spells to either aid in tower construction or sabotage opponents feels gimmicky rather than truly strategic. The spells lack depth and proper balancing, resulting in moments where victory or defeat feels more like a roll of the dice rather than a result of skillful play.
Tricky Towers does offer a variety of different game modes, including solo challenges and online multiplayer, which can add some replay value to an otherwise lackluster experience. However, these additional modes fail to address the game's fundamental issues and do little to salvage its overall mediocre impression.
While it is commendable that publisher and developer WeirdBeard attempted to create a nostalgic multiplayer experience reminiscent of classic games, Tricky Towers ultimately falls short of its intended mark. Unfortunately, its frustrating controls, lackluster gameplay, and underwhelming use of magic spells make it a game that fails to capture the charm and excitement of its retro inspirations. Retro enthusiasts may find some semblance of enjoyment in its visuals and basic premise, but for most gamers, Tricky Towers for the Nintendo Switch is a forgettable title that does little to stand out in a crowded genre.
