Blitzkrieg: Burning Horizon for PC takes players on a thrilling journey through the battles of WWII. With its 18-mission campaign centered around General Rommel, gamers have the chance to relive iconic battles such as Ardennes, Tripolis, Tobruk, El Alamein, Sicily, and Normandy. Additionally, the add-on introduces a brand new nation to the war: Japan.
One of the standout features of Burning Horizon is the inclusion of 50 new units, including Zero fighters, Blenheim bombers, the M5 Stuart tank, and an array of German tanks, US Marines, and Afrika Korps units. This wide selection of units adds depth to the strategic gameplay, allowing players to employ various tactics and strategies.
One aspect that truly adds a nostalgic touch to Burning Horizon is the improved AI. The enemy forces now demonstrate advanced tactics, seeking weak points in your defenses, clearing minefields, and effectively utilizing their air force. This heightened level of challenge keeps players on their toes and provides a more realistic and engaging experience.
The mission objectives in Burning Horizon offer a diverse range of scenarios, from airborne assaults to evacuations, covert operations, defense maneuvers, counter-attacks, and even assassinations. This variety ensures that players are constantly faced with new challenges and keeps the gameplay fresh and engaging.
While the concept and content of Burning Horizon are commendable, the execution falls short in some areas. The graphics and overall presentation of the game could have been improved to better capture the intensity and grandeur of WWII battles. Additionally, the gameplay mechanics can be clunky and lack the polish that modern gamers have come to expect.
Overall, Blitzkrieg: Burning Horizon is a commendable addition to the Blitzkrieg series that offers an extensive campaign, new units, improved AI, and a diverse range of mission objectives. While the game may not meet the refined standards of modern titles, it successfully captures the essence of retro gaming with its nostalgic feel and reminiscent gameplay. Vintage gaming enthusiasts and history buffs will likely find Burning Horizon to be a worthwhile addition to their collection, despite its flaws.
