Inuyasha: Secret of the Divine Jewel for the Nintendo DS attempts to bring the popular animated TV and comic series to life, but unfortunately falls short of capturing the magic and excitement of its source material. As a retro gaming enthusiast, it pains me to give such a low rating to a game based on a beloved franchise, but honesty is key when it comes to providing an insightful review.
One of the most disappointing aspects of the game is the lackluster storytelling. Despite the intriguing promise of experiencing the origins and exciting stories of new characters, the plot fails to engage players and feels like a missed opportunity. The game relies heavily on the familiarity of the Inuyasha characters, but fails to provide them with compelling arcs or meaningful interactions.
The gameplay itself is where the true disappointment lies. The command-based control scheme feels outdated and clunky, making battles with hordes of monsters a frustrating and tedious affair. In addition, the new Cover Fellow System (CFS) fails to add any innovative elements to the gameplay, resulting in a missed opportunity to create exciting strategies or unique ways for Inuyasha and his friends to work together.
While Inuyasha: Secret of the Divine Jewel attempts to invoke a sense of nostalgia for retro gaming enthusiasts, it ultimately falls short in capturing the essence of classic games. The visuals and audio, while decent, do little to differentiate themselves from other games on the DS and fail to truly immerse players in the world of Inuyasha.
As a seasoned retro gaming journalist, it is always disheartening to come across games that do not live up to their potential. Inuyasha: Secret of the Divine Jewel is unfortunately one of those games, with outdated gameplay mechanics and a lackluster story that fails to capture the charm and excitement of the beloved franchise. While fans of Inuyasha may find some enjoyment in revisiting familiar characters, I can only recommend this game to the most die-hard fans who are willing to overlook its flaws in favor of an Inuyasha fix.
