Elite Forces: Unit 77 for Nintendo DS is a strategic action game developed by Abylight that puts players in control of Unit 77, a crack commando unit tasked with tackling a high-stakes mission. The game opens with the alarming disappearance of prominent figures from the worlds of politics and entertainment, serving as a chilling reminder of the looming terrorist threat that lies beneath the surface. In this time of crisis, it is up to Unit 77 to step up and put a stop to the conspiracy before it engulfs the world in chaos.
Despite its noble intentions and intriguing premise, Elite Forces: Unit 77 falls short of its potential in several key areas. The gameplay, while solid in its foundation, lacks the depth and excitement needed to fully engage players. The controls feel clunky and unresponsive at times, hindering the overall experience. Moreover, the graphics and sound design, while serviceable, do little to stand out and immerse players in the game's world.
On a positive note, the game does have a nostalgic charm that harkens back to classic strategic action titles of the past. Fans of retro gaming will appreciate the straightforward and challenging gameplay that requires careful planning and tactical decision-making. The diverse missions and objectives offer a decent amount of variety and replay value, ensuring that players will not quickly tire of the game's offerings.
However, it is important to acknowledge that Elite Forces: Unit 77 does not quite live up to the high standards set by other retro-inspired titles. The lackluster execution of its mechanics, coupled with uninspired visuals and audio, prevents it from truly capturing the magic of the classics it seeks to emulate. As a result, while it may satisfy die-hard fans of the genre and era, it falls short of being a standout title in its own right.
In conclusion, Elite Forces: Unit 77 for Nintendo DS, developed by Abylight and published by Gammick Entertainment, attempts to deliver an old-school strategic action experience but falls short in key areas. While it possesses some nostalgic charm and offers diverse missions, its lackluster execution in terms of gameplay, controls, graphics, and sound design prevent it from truly shining. Die-hard fans of retro gaming may find some enjoyment in its offerings, but others may be left wanting more. With a rating of 3 out of 10, it unfortunately falls into the realm of forgettable rather than unforgettable.
