Ninja Usagimaru: The Gem of Blessings for the 3DS is a charming little game with a notable retro feel. As an experienced retro gaming enthusiast, I always appreciate when developers pay homage to the classics, and this game does just that. The pixel art graphics and catchy chiptune soundtrack immediately transport you back to the days of old-school gaming.
However, while the nostalgic elements are certainly enjoyable, the overall gameplay experience leaves much to be desired. The premise is simple enough: you control Usagimaru, a ninja rabbit, on a mission to rescue villagers from the clutches of the Mononoke army. Each stage presents a captured villager and a treacherous path full of traps and enemies.
The game relies heavily on trial and error, forcing you to learn from each failure and adjust your approach accordingly. This can be both frustrating and satisfying, depending on your tolerance for challenging gameplay. Unfortunately, the controls can feel a bit clunky at times, leading to unnecessary deaths and a sense of unfairness.
The levels themselves are well-designed, offering a decent variety of obstacles and enemies to overcome. It's clear that attention was given to creating diverse and interesting challenges. Additionally, the ability to utilize the environment and even the enemies themselves in your rescue missions adds a layer of strategic depth.
One aspect of Ninja Usagimaru that stands out is the inclusion of various tools at your disposal. From shurikens to smoke bombs, these gadgets provide different ways to approach each level. This adds a nice element of choice and experimentation to the gameplay, as you can customize your playstyle to suit your preferences.
Despite these positive aspects, however, Ninja Usagimaru falls short in several key areas. The difficulty curve is often unbalanced, with some levels feeling unfairly punishing while others are a breeze. Additionally, the lack of variety in visuals and level design can make the experience feel repetitive after a while.
Overall, Ninja Usagimaru: The Gem of Blessings is an earnest attempt to capture the spirit of classic retro games. While it succeeds in some areas, such as its nostalgic art style and catchy soundtrack, it falls short in others, such as its clunky controls and unbalanced difficulty. If you're a die-hard fan of retro platformers, you may find some enjoyment here. However, for the average gamer, I would recommend considering other options before diving into this bunny's adventure.
