NHL Hitz 20-03 for Game Boy Advance attempts to bring the excitement and intensity of adrenaline-style hockey to the handheld console. As the only dedicated hockey franchise of its kind for next-generation platforms, it aims to captivate players with its over-the-top 3-on-3 gameplay.
One of the game’s standout features is its ability to create a team from scratch and guide it to success through various international competitions. This new franchise mode adds depth to the single-player experience, allowing gamers to nurture their team from its infancy to a Stanley Cup contender. It provides a sense of progression and achievement rarely found in other sports games of the time.
The gameplay itself is fast-paced and action-packed, with players leaping, gliding, checking, passing, and scoring on their opponents. The tight controls make it easy for players to execute their desired moves, and the inclusion of goalies adds an extra layer of challenge and strategy to the matches.
Visually, NHL Hitz 20-03 showcases the capabilities of the Game Boy Advance with its vibrant colors and detailed player sprites. While it may not reach the graphical fidelity of its console counterparts, it still manages to capture the essence of the sport and create an engaging visual experience.
However, despite its positive aspects, NHL Hitz 20-03 does have its drawbacks. The game is let down by its limited gameplay options and lack of depth in certain areas. The lack of licensed teams and players also hinders the game’s authenticity and leaves it feeling somewhat incomplete.
Overall, NHL Hitz 20-03 for Game Boy Advance offers an enjoyable and fast-paced hockey experience, but it falls short in terms of content and depth. Despite its shortcomings, it is still a nostalgic trip for fans of retro hockey games and a reminder of the unique charm of classic handheld gaming. While it may not be the definitive hockey experience on the Game Boy Advance, it still manages to provide some adrenaline-fueled fun.
