Advance Guardian Heroes for the Game Boy Advance is a valiant attempt to recreate the classic Sega Saturn game of the same name. As a side-scrolling fighter, it offers a refreshing twist on the genre with its extensive roster of more than 20 playable characters and a staggering 160 powerful moves to master.
While the game certainly has its strengths, such as the ability to upgrade your fighter’s moves and abilities as you progress, it unfortunately falls short in several areas. Perhaps the most glaring flaw is the lack of a publisher for the game, which raises questions about the level of support and polish it received.
Despite this, Advance Guardian Heroes manages to capture the essence of retro gaming with its nostalgic feel and reminiscent gameplay. It harkens back to a time when side-scrolling fighters were all the rage and offers a satisfying dose of nostalgia for seasoned retro gaming enthusiasts.
The multiplayer aspect of the game also deserves praise, as it offers a variety of scenarios for both cooperative and competitive play. Whether you choose to team up with friends or go head-to-head against them, the game provides a range of challenges and battle arenas to keep you engaged.
However, it’s important to note that the game’s rating of 3.5/10 reflects its flaws and limitations. While it may hold appeal for those seeking a nostalgic experience, it falls short in terms of overall quality and execution. As a seasoned retro gaming enthusiast, it’s disappointing to see a game with such potential fail to fully deliver on its promise.
In conclusion, Advance Guardian Heroes for the Game Boy Advance is a mixed bag. While it successfully captures the essence of retro gaming and offers a variety of multiplayer scenarios, its lack of publisher and overall polish detract from its potential. Retro gaming enthusiasts may find some enjoyment in its nostalgic features, but for those seeking a truly exceptional gaming experience, this may not be the best choice.
