Without new and exciting designs, the franchise would be in trouble. That’s why coming up with new creatures is taken so seriously by the Pokemon company. Unfortunately, even with their best efforts, some Pokemon are created with less-than-impressive designs.

Within the Pokemon community, there are several ways to classify these creatures – based on their power, type, color, style, or inspiration. However, there’s one group that’s not particularly desirable: the “ugly Pokemon”. Regardless of how strong they may be, these are the Pokemon that no one wants to invite to their party.

Even though some of the poorly designed Pokemon have great abilities, their appearance is a letdown. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of the ugliest Pokemon based on our opinions. Understand that each design has its merits, but some of them are just hideous. It’s impressive that the designers can produce such terrible-looking creatures with exceptional abilities.

Let’s not waste any more time, and dive right into the list of the ugliest Pokemon. Here’s a table of contents to help you navigate:

10. Victreebell

During a Pokemon binge-watch session, I came across a particular Pokemon known as Victreebell and made a vow to never use a grass-type Pokemon again. This Pokemon’s design was unappealing to me, appearing like a clumsy water jug with hastily-stuffed leaves. What’s worse is that it consumes smaller Pokemon and melts them into acidic goop within its own body. Afterwards, it lures unsuspecting prey into its open jaws using the same acid goop, pushing them into its darkness-filled abode. This Pokemon is so unattractive and evil that it is a regular member of Team Rocket and often cast as the villain in Pokemon fan games.

9. Omastar

Let’s discuss Omastar. While some may find this Pokemon “cute,” its design as an aquatic creature leaves something to be desired. Despite its protective shell and body, Omastar’s menacing eyes suggest it is not one to mess with. Yet, the sad truth is that this Pokemon went extinct in real life because its shell was too heavy for it to catch prey. Imagine starving to death among a sea of millions of other creatures, all because of a design flaw. While Omastar’s appearance and extinction may not be directly related, it’s a tragic fact worth considering.

8. Natu

Introducing Natu, the Pokemon that resembles a child’s first drawing of an overweight bird. It looks like it would be incapable of flight due to its shape, and its color scheme of greens and reds make it look like a watermelon that got lost in the jungle. Its face is its most surprising feature, taking up its entire body, and its thin, large eyes are creepy. Although its yellow-tinted wings add a pop of color, they don’t seem to serve any function since Natu is unable to fly. It’s no surprise that Natu made it to our list of the ugliest Pokemon ever.

7. Lileep

Let’s chat about a Pokemon that has everyone baffled. It gives off a flower-like aura, but it’s not a flower. It has tentacle-like characteristics, but it’s not an octopus. It might possess tree-like qualities, but it’s definitely not a tree. Meet Lileep, the oddity Pokemon.

I have no idea what the designer was thinking when they dreamed up Lileep. It’s not even remotely similar to any other Pokemon – it resembles a creature you might stumble upon on a beach. And let’s address those eyes – are they on top of its head or on its chest? Nobody knows for certain.

Frankly, I’m tempted to boot this unsightly beast across the beach every time I lay eyes on it. The lack of imagination in Lileep’s design is incredibly disappointing. Sorry, Lileep, but you’ve landed a spot on the ugliness roster.

6. Binacle

As soon as I saw Binnacle’s design, I burst out laughing. It was hard for me to believe that the creators gave it the OK and added it to the franchise. The Pokemon’s inspiration was pretty boring – a goose barnacle – but I thought the designers could have done a much better job with it. Instead, we got what looks like two hands sticking out of a rock, angrily staring at each other, like a couple who have been married for way too long. Even as I write this, I’m still confused about how and why this creature was made.

5. Bruxish

Bruxish is a Pokemon from the Alola region, which is known for its abundance of water-type Pokemon. However, calling Bruxish a fish-like Pokemon would be a disservice to all aquatic creatures. Simply put, Bruxish is just plain ugly.

Although the name Bruxish makes reference to teeth-grinding, why did the designers choose to give it such terrifying teeth and exaggerated lips? And what’s with those huge, fluttery eyelashes? It’s like the creators wanted to make Bruxish look flirtatious, which only adds an extra layer of weirdness to this already strange Pokemon.

To make matters worse, the artist responsible for this creature’s design chose an outlandish color scheme. With blue, yellow, pink, and purple hues all overlapping, it’s difficult to know where to focus your attention first.

4. Flapple

In the past, I loved Dragon-type Pokemon because, let’s face it, they’re dragons and who doesn’t love that? Each new generation brought even cooler Dragons that won everyone over. However, everything changed when the eighth generation games came out and I discovered Flapple, a Grass/Dragon that made me question everything I knew about Dragon-types.

Some people may think it’s cute, but let’s be real, if you came across this thing in the wild, it would be pretty weird. It looks like an apple with wings and horns. It’s like the designers just took a bite out of an apple and decided to make a Dragon out of it.

What happened to designing Dragons based on legendary creatures from stories and folklore? I don’t want to find a Dragon hiding in a tree that looks like an apple and think “yup, that’s normal.” But that’s exactly what Applin, Flapple’s predecessor, looks like – a tiny apple with a tail. And, to top it off, Flapple just gets taller with the same apple still attached above and below its body.

Apparently, this fruit-Dragon uses its apples to blend in and hide from predators. What’s next, a banana-inspired Dragon that peels its skin to hide? Come on, Gamefreak, you’re better than this.

3. Dracovish

The latest generation of Pokemon dealt a brutal blow to my love for dragons. It feels like they completely destroyed my passion, leaving it trapped in an unreachable abyss. If you’re feeling confused by the different generations, check out all the Pokemon games in order to gain some clarity.

One of our favorite Dragon-type creatures fell victim to Gamefreak’s questionable design decisions in the eighth gen. Despite its tremendous potential, this fossil dragon-type ended up looking like it had been bitten and left to suffer. The head doesn’t match the green body at all – it looks like a silly costume! While I understand that this was done on purpose, I have to give credit to the designers for creating such a repulsive creature.

It’s official – this is hands down one of the ugliest Pokemon in the entire franchise.

2. Probopass

I remember the day I was exploring the Hoenn region, having a blast chasing after wild Pokemon, feeling carefree and happy. But then, things took a turn. I stumbled upon a Nosepass and was taken aback by its odd design. I had to search online to figure out if it was a hidden surprise or a joke my friends played on me. It looked like it didn’t even belong in the world of Pokemon, but more in a Super Mario game.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, Nosepass turned into something far more terrifying: Probopass. It was like the creators took all my fears and turned it up to eleven. This monster has eyes that appear human-like, a prominent nose, and to top it off, a mustache – or is it nose hair? I can’t even begin to comprehend its features, and I pray to the Pokemon gods that I will never encounter it again.

I wouldn’t hesitate to call it the ugliest Pokemon of all time, as I shudder at the thought of it.

1. Jynx

Dear reader, there is no doubt that Jynx is the ugliest Pokémon ever created. It consistently tops the lists of unsightly creatures, no matter who is making them. Many factors contribute to Jynx’s unattractiveness.

Firstly, it’s strange that a Pokémon would aspire to look like a human woman. The resemblance is disconcerting and has led to Jynx being portrayed as a sinister character in many of the most popular Pokémon games. Something about it just doesn’t feel right.

When Jynx was first introduced in the anime, many viewers found it petrifying. The emotionless stare, oversized lips, and blonde locks all contributed to the sense of creepy dystopia that surrounds Jynx. If Nicki Minaj were to manifest in the Pokémon world, Jynx’s energy would be on par.

Jynx’s creation has been the subject of controversy. Some fans accused the Pokémon franchise of basing Jynx on the blackface characters of yesteryear, which prompted widespread outrage. Others believe the character is drawn from drag queen culture. Regardless, it is clear that Jynx is not going to win any beauty contests anytime soon.

The world of Pokemon is all about creativity and imagination.
